Home Safety Assessments for Seniors in Omaha

Brian Pfeifer is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS). The review considers how you enter, move through, and use your home, the tasks that have become difficult, and the changes that matter most to you. Family members and caregivers are welcome to participate.

Common areas include entrances and thresholds, walking paths and flooring, stairs and handrails, bathroom access and support, bedrooms and nighttime routes, lighting, door hardware, and the reach and space needed for everyday tasks.

Consider a review when someone has experienced a fall or near-fall, started using a mobility device, become less confident using the home, or is preparing to return after hospitalization or rehabilitation. You can also plan proactively before a problem becomes urgent.

Discuss which concerns need attention first and which improvements can be planned for later. Some situations call for small repairs, better lighting, or clearer pathways. Others may call for grab bars, handrails, ramps, stair lifts, or broader home modifications.

Share any recommendations from your doctor, occupational therapist, physical therapist, or other care professional so the home discussion can take those needs into account.
